Catalysis by ceria and related materials
Cerium oxide (CeO2) is a technologically important material due to its wide applications as a promoter in three-way catalysts (TWCs) for the elimination of toxic auto-exhaust gases, low-temperature water–gas shift (WGS) reaction, as well as biotechnology, environmental chemistry, and medicine. However, ceria-based catalysts have also been developed for different applications in organic chemistry. The redox and acid–base properties of ceria, either alone or in the presence of transition metals, are important parameters that allow to activate complex organic molecules and to selectively orient their transformation. How to modulate these parameters is an important and interesting subject.
